  • Single-Payer Canvass!

    Saturday, April 01, 2017 at 12:00 PM
South Berkeley Community Church in Berkeley, CA

Want to see single-payer health care passed already? Want to learn more about how single payer would work in California, sharpen your skills as an organizer, and learn more about how to build campaigns from the ground up?

Come canvass with us! Last time, we had 160 volunteers connect with 600 of our neighbors, before the bill even came out. This will be our first training and canvass day after the bill drops, so it'll be in the news and time to act. We'll go over what single-payer is, how to talk to our neighbors about it, and pair first-time folks with experienced canvassers. Then we go spread the word about single payer, sign up supporters, recruit new members to DSA, debrief, and hang out!

We'll have tons of snacks and lots of sit-down roles for comrades with limited mobility.

  • East Bay DSA General Meeting

    Sunday, April 23, 2017 at 01:00 PM
Oakland Peace Center in Oakland, CA

We are excited to announce our next General Membership Meeting! Mark your calendars.

We'll learn what the organization has been up to and how to get involved in the various working committees, vote on the chapter's new bylaws, and end with a mixer and break-out groups.

Since we will be voting on the chapter's bylaws, this is a very important meeting to come to. We would like all of our members to come and make their voices heard.

Check out the Facebook event page and stay tuned for updates. As we develop the draft bylaws, we will be sending out more information and looking forward to your feedback.

We'll have lots of opportunities for members to help with registration, setup, clean up, printing of materials, and all manner of prep work and day-of roles. This is a GREAT WAY to get a little more involved if you've been checking things out from the sidelines. List of volunteer roles coming soon. Email events@eastbaydsa.org if you're interested in getting involved!

  • Peoples' Climate Movement Festival

    Saturday, April 29, 2017 at 11:00 AM
Lake Merritt Amphitheater in Oakland, CA

On Saturday, April 29, East Bay DSA will be organizing at the People's Climate Movement festival at Lake Merritt from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. This event is to defend the environment, advocate for our communities, reject Trump's agenda, and work for a just, sustainable future. It will be family-friendly and feature local community members, climate activists, music and spoken word, information and engagement booths, and hands-on activities for all ages. It will begin around the Lake Merritt Amphitheater adjacent to 12th Street near Lake Merritt BART and culminate in a procession around the lake in the late afternoon.

Endorsers include a wide range of front-line environmental, labor, peace, advocacy, and community organizations. It is in support of a day of national and international mobilization for justice, jobs, peace, and the planet. The event will also feature preparations for an environmental justice contingent to participate in the May Day march and rally the following Monday.

East Bay DSA volunteers are needed to distribute literature, recruit, and speak with the public. We will be telling attendees about our campaign for universal, single payer health care in California and all of DSA's educational and political activities. We will also be helping provide children's activities and childcare at the event.

    RSVP on Facebook

To get involved, contact ExComm member Susan Chacin at susanchnew@gmail.com or (510) 332-8569.

  • Abortion Bowl-A-Thon

    Sunday, April 30, 2017 at 04:00 PM
    Albany Bowl in Albany, CA

April is national Abortion Bowl-A-Thon month! Join the Socialist Feminist Working Group in supporting the National Network for Abortion Fund's (NNAF) annual effort to raise funds for women who seek abortions but need financial help.

What is a Bowl-A-Thon exactly? It's like a marathon where you raise money for a cause you care about—but this supports abortion access with pizza, beer, and bowling!

ACCESS Women's Health Justice - Bay Area has provided us with everything we need to fundraise. Stay tuned in the coming weeks for info about how to register. So start brainstorming team names (ex. "Zsa Zsa Gabortions") and check out the ACCESS Bowl-A-Thon site. All proceeds from this event go to ACCESS Women's Health Justice to support abortion access and reproductive justice in California.
