On this date in 1896\, the Supreme Court of the United State s ruled in Plessy v Ferguson that segregation was not unlawful di scrimination. It was one of many decisions made by a handful of unelected people that rolled back the gains of the Civil War and Reconstruction era. During that decades-long struggle\, white Northern farmers\, workers\, an d capitalists formed a temporary military and political alliance with Sout hern enslaved people against their enslavers. Each side did so out of very different motivations. This alliance produced a radical democratic moveme nt&mdash\;arguably the greatest so far in American history&mdash\;that ove rturned some but not all of the racist and oligarchic provisions of the or iginal Constitution. Despite the efforts of many people\, including the Ra dical Republicans in Congress\, Reconstruction was ultimately defeated.
Today\, everyone who is continuing the struggle for political and soc ial emancipation and universal and equal rights can learn from Reconstruct ion's history of victories and defeats.
This is a hybrid ev ent. Food will be provided. The presentation will cover the stage s of Reconstruction\, the implications of its defeat\, and why this histor y is relevant. Q&A and discussion will follow.

If we aren't going to li ve under capitalism\, how will we organize things? How can we take lessons from nature to ensure a good life for everyone & also prevent a mass exti nction crisis\, pandemics\, & climate change?
Join us for the final week of a 4-week series where we discuss the book\, Half-Earth Socialism: A Plan to Save the Future from Extinction\, Climate Change\, & Pandemics. Troy Vettese\, co-author of the book & a post-doc at UC Berkeley\, is fini shing a fellowship\, & before he leaves town\, he's offered to lead our di scussion.

You can play with a wide range of technolo gies and policies spanning different fields and ideologies. Will you lead the world to ecological utopia or planetary ruin? You can play the video g ame on the Half-Earth Socialism website or on Twitch. We'll also have the ga me available for folks to play at our wrap party on 5/22.

Each month\, the Socialism Beats Fascism Committee hosts a Community Meeting to discuss a pressing political issue that impac ts us here in the East Bay. We've heard from teachers organizing to defend their students from ICE\, federal workers facing crackdowns & fighting to protect our public services\, a bus driver organizing his co-workers to p ush back against austerity\, a Palestinian organizer helping to stop weapo ns shipments from Oakland to Israel\, volunteers helping workers unionize to fight back against the daily oppressions they face on the job\, and lea ders of the successful fight to divest Alameda County from Israeli aparthe id. Each meeting has been filled with rich community discussion as we proc ess our political moment... and take action.
For every campaign we d iscussed\, we showed up later that month to ORGANIZE! Volunteers from the Community Meeting have given testimony at Board meetings against investmen t in apartheid\, flyered Oakland businesses with signs educating workers o n preventing ICE from entering\, joined ICE watch patrols\, and so much mo re.

Workers’ and immigrants’ rights are under attack&mdash\;stand up and fight back!
East Bay DSA is part of the Oakland Sin Fronteras (OSF) coalition a long-standing tradition of organiz ing\, recognition and celebration of International Workers’ Day (also kn own as "May Day") in Oakland.
While the U.S. refuses to recognize Ma y 1st as International Workers’ Day\, our communities do\, and they stan d in solidarity with millions worldwide\, fighting against the exploitatio n of workers and the oppression of peoples\, lands\, and nations. This yea r\, we continue that tradition with even greater urgency\, as immigrants\, workers\, trans folks and marginalized communities face escalating attack s and racist policies that strip away rights and protections.
We ma rch to reject xenophobia\, border militarization\, kidnappings of communit y members by ICE\, the US-Israeli genocide of the Palestinian people and s tate violence that continues to harm communities of color. We call for ful l dignity\, respect\, and self-determination for all.
This May Day we gather in Oakland on Indigenous Ohlone land standing in unity with work ing class struggles here at home and abroad.

-Setting up and mainta ining a group chat
-Presenting information to neighbors

This pr esentation will explore the context\, contradictions\, influence\, & conte mporary significance of the Declaration's assertion of universal and equal human and political rights. It will argue that this assertion was and sti ll is revolutionary.
