Phonebank for Strike Ready: Stand with Public Healthcare Workers!

September 24, 2020

Calling all comrades! Alameda Healthcare Workers need our solidarity!

Public hospital workers have had enough of the union-busting tactics and unsafe work environment created by Alameda Health Systems. Last Monday, the SEIU 1021 bargaining team announced enough is enough! They have reached an impasse with the board of trustees and are calling for a strike vote of the general membership Monday, September 21st to Friday, September 25th. In order to ensure safe staffing, quality patient care, and wages that allow workers to stay in the Bay Area, they may have to put their jobs on the line.

In the event of a Yes vote, East Bay DSA needs to be in battle formation from the moment of the announcement. That’s why we’ll be holding our AHS Strike Readiness Community Assembly Sunday, September 27th from 4-6 pm. RSVP here to be part of a struggle to bring public health into public hands!

You can also join us at our phonebank Tuesday, September 22nd, or Thursday, September 24th, from 6 pm-8 pm, or Saturday, September 26th from 11 am-1 pm to turnout members to the Launch!

Our chapter is proud to have collectively pledged $500 to support the healthcare workers, but we need everyone to chip in if we want to meet our goal. This Strike Relief Fund is for union members unable to make rent, buy groceries, get healthcare, or meet other basic needs due to lost income in the event of a strike.

"If a health worker is suffering, her community is suffering. A healthcare system that neglects its workers is neglecting its patients."

— Sheleka Carter, Community Health Outreach Worker at Highland Hospital

“How can we do more for our community with less from our administrators?”

— Marina Stankov-Hodge, Labor and Delivery Nurse at Highland Hospital

If you haven’t yet heard, Alameda Health System has been direly mismanaged by an anti-union, “independent” board of trustees since 1996 that has plunged the hospital into massive debt. This board has kept the hospital constantly understaffed and lacking protective equipment, even before COVID-19. Now, in the midst of a pandemic, the Board has gone so far as to layoff Sexual Assault Response Team members, fire whistleblowers, deny county inspectors access to the facility, and consistently bargain in bad faith with SEIU 1021 and CNA.

Now the workers are fighting back! Let’s get ready to fight with them.
