🌹 Cal YDSA Night School: UAW Academic Workers Strike
September 26, 2022
Right now, almost 50,000 academic workers in unions affiliated with the United Auto Workers at the University of California are in the middle of contract negotiations with the University, including nearly 10,000 here at UC Berkeley. Their demands are ambitious and include the elimination of rent burden by implementing a cost of living adjustment, strong protections against bullying in the workplace, and support for international scholars.
But the transformative potential of this strike stretches far beyond campus: the University of California is the 4th largest employer in the 7th largest economy in the world, and these “common good bargaining” demands can have an impact beyond the membership of these unions. If the University of California doesn’t begin bargaining with these workers in good faith over wages, bullying, and other issues, all 50,000 workers will be able to call a strike authorization vote and potentially go on strike if authorized by the membership.
Join this Night School hosted by CAL YDSA to find out more about the potential strike and what you can do to help.
