When We Strike, We Win: Lessons from the LA Teachers' Strike

February 9, 2019

On January 14, over 30,000 Los Angeles teachers went on strike with mass community support. For multiple days, crowds of 50-60,000 people marched in support of the teachers, with many parents keeping their kids out of school in solidarity. The strike ended in a historic victory for the United Teachers of Los Angeles and for LA public schools. The teachers won smaller class sizes; more nurses, librarians, and counselors; increased support for special education; a 50% reduction in district over-testing; and a moratorium on charter schools, among other significant demands.

Now, Oakland teachers are gearing up for their own strike. What lessons can we learn from the success of the LA teachers? Please join the Oakland Education Association and the East Bay Democratic Socialists of America for a discussion with UTLA Secretary Arlene Inouye and teachers from the OEA.

The venue is wheelchair-accessible.
