Candidate Statement: Luci R. - At Large

Mere weeks ago, building a labor party in this country felt like a long term vision. Overnight, a global pandemic has created a window of opportunity big enough to drive a busload of Rosa Luxemburg’s through. In the chaos of this transformational moment, we are bracing ourselves for explosive growth in our socialist movement. Make no mistake, we have a once in a lifetime opportunity to build the model in DSA chapters all over this country, for a US Labor party. We have a profound mission here in the East Bay to get it right on the ground under our feet.

In the midst of this monumental moment in our movement, I come to you for your support in order to grant me the opportunity to help craft the organizing vision for our chapter, moving into these turbulent years. As a 26 year bedside critical care nurse, witnessing the calamity and beauty of the human drama, is just part of the job description. Working under a union contract for the last 18 years here in California however, has changed every aspect of my life for the better. In fact it was following a deep recession in 2008, that my union called upon me to find my voice and lead my nurses on nine strikes to beat back the worst assault on a nurses’ contract in the history of the California Nurses Association. I learned what it takes to motivate people who do not consider themselves political, to fight for common cause in a spirit of solidarity and shared struggle. It would be an honor to bring that experience, along with my ten years organizing with the Richmond Progressive Alliance, to the next steering committee.
