Resolution to Fund In-Person Socials

Submitted by Benny Z.

Whereas Alameda and Contra Costa County are both in the Orange Tier, which allows for informal gatherings of up to 50 people outside.

Whereas everyone over 16 in Alameda and Contra Costa County is eligible for vaccination

Whereas we have been unable to socialize in-person, which has restricted relationship building.

Therefore be it resolved that the Steering Committee encourage chapter committees to hold in-person social events open to the membership.

Be it further resolved that every committee in East Bay DSA be allocated an initial $200 discretionary funding to spend on food, drink, and other items for socials.

Be it further resolved that every social have sign ins in order to do contact tracing in the unlikely event of a positive COVID case.

Resolution to support keeping the Oakland A's stadium in East Oakland

submitted by Luke T., Rex LC

Whereas the Oakland Athletic’s proposed Oakland Waterfront Ballpark District at Howard Terminal, which will fundamentally transform Oakland, prioritizes corporate profit over community need,

Whereas the proposed development in Howard Terminal would allow luxury housing to be built on public land and further gentrify Oakland,

Whereas thousands of good union jobs that are predominantly held by African American Oakland residents are put at risk by the deindustrialization of the Howard Terminal,

Whereas constructing a new stadium on the Howard Terminal could risk both environmental and public health disasters due to hazardous material in the ground and resulting impact on air quality with pollutants,

Whereas the cost of $855 million in infrastructure to support the proposed project would be paid for by the public,

Whereas the meager ‘community benefits’ promised by the A’s would in fact be funded by the public through taxpayer subsidies and take decades to materialize,

Whereas billionaire Oakland A’s owner John Fisher has no commitment to the fans or the people of Oakland, exemplified by threatening a capital strike if the City of Oakland doesn’t accept his offer,

Whereas the Oakland A’s have already bought the original East Oakland coliseum land from the City of Oakland at a deeply discounted price with plans to privately develop on it despite the more readily feasible option of redeveloping the stadium there,

Whereas Oakland’s working-class communities are in dire need of real investment, including 100% affordable housing and expanded public transportation,

Therefore be it resolved East Bay DSA calls on the Oakland City Council to vote no on the terms or any further approval of the Oakland Waterfront Ballpark District at Howard Terminal.
